Elevators are something people take very personally, after all they are the means to access our jobs, homes and other important parts of our lives. For some they can mean the difference of an area being accessible or not.
One of the newer technologies within the elevating industry is a system called Destination Dispatch.
Typical elevating services work by people in a hall pushing either an up or down button. The system than selects which elevator is closest / en route and dispatches that elevator to the floor. Once the elevator arrives people get in and push a button to select their floor.

In some instances with Destination Dispatch card readers can be set up to designate which floor a user is going to – eliminating the need to push a button.
As with everything in life people are hesitant to change and in some cases this can be for good reason. The system in some cases forces people to wait longer at the floor in return for a shorter ride. In addition the system requires people to pay attention in the lobby, in a day and age where cell phones are a constant distraction this can take some getting used to. In addition, installing this system in an existing operating building can be very impactful to the service of the existing elevators.
How does it get installed?
In a new building the installation of this system is fairly straight forward so I am going to focus on retrofitting of an existing system. Each installation will change in details so I am going to keep this high level:
- Depending on the age of the controlling devices of the elevators a full mod maybe required (note: old equipment doesn’t play well with new computers).
- New wiring is pulled through the existing elevator ducts within the shaft for the new screens.
- Existing buttons are decommissioned and screens are cut into the walls.
- Terminations are completed both at the machine room and at buttons (if security tie in is required it is completed at this time).
- New screens are commissioned and system goes live.
As noted above – all installations are custom and require special attention by the on site personnel.
