Term:Quarter Cut

« Back to Glossary Index

Quarter cut is a method of cutting wood whereby the logs are sawn into lumber. The resulting lumber is called quartersawn (quarter-sawn), quartered, and radially-sawn.

Quarter-sawn boards have greater stability of form and size with less cupping, shrinkage across the width, shake and splitting, and other good qualities.

Quarter cut typically results in smaller boards requiring a larger log in order to get bigger pieces.
